WCOPMA’s 1st Event For 2008 Is In The Books

The West Coast Outlaw Pro Modified Association completed its first event for the 2008 season this past weekend at Sacramento Raceway Park. There were 9 cars that showed up for the 8-car show on Saturday, but after a test session on Thursday, Tim Stefan and Jack Halsey left due to damaged or hurt parts that were not fixable.

After the first qualifying session on Friday night Rod Burbage lead the field in his blown 58 Vette with a 6.294 @ 227.93. The rest of the field looked like this:

  1. 1.  Rod Burbage 6.294 @ 227.93

  2. 2.  Perry Brown 7.665 @ 176.96

  3. 3.  Doug Reed 9.358 @ 106.52

  4. 4.  Dan Myers 9.702 @ 97.92

  5. 5.  Doug Ballance 14.506 @ 55.74

Randy Kay with his 63 Vette had to sit out the first session due to engine problems that would later get fixed and Jay Diedrich in his “Evil Outlaw” 57 Chevy also had to sit it out due to his daughter graduating from school.

When Saturday morning rolled around everyone was ready for the second qualifying session. In the end Rod Burbage’s 6.29 from Friday night was good enough to hold on to the top spot while Randy Kay bumped up into the number 2 spot with a 6.330 @ 235.62. The final qualifying order was as follows:

  1. 1.  Rod Burbage* 6.294 @ 227.93

  2. 2.  Randy Kay* 6.330 @ 235.62

  3. 3.  Perry Brown 7.599 @ 178.73

  4. 4.  Doug Ballance 7.976 @ 116.80

  5. 5.  Dan Myers* 9.310 @ 117.63

  6. 6.  Doug Reed* 9.358 @ 106.52

  7. 7.  Jay Diedrich* 10.129 @ 85.07

The first round saw Rod Burbage getting the bye, Doug Balance vs. Dan Myers, Randy Kay vs. Jay Diedrich and Perry Brown vs. Doug Reed. From there Burbage, Kay, Myers and Reed would advance to the semi-final round. The semis placed Rod Burbage against Dan Myers and Randy Kay against Doug Reed. Rod Burbage banged his blower in the lights getting his win against Myers and Randy Kay set the event high mph at 236.76 getting the win as well. Once the Spec Rite Converter crew for Burbage got back to the pit to view the damage from the blower backfiring, they decided they didn’t have enough time to get it fixed in time for the finals, so therefore, Dan Myers was re-instated via the “break rule”. In the finals it would be Kay vs. Myers. Both cars did their burnouts and backed up, but as Kay was backing up he was leaking transmission fluid and was shut off giving the single (and the win) to Dan Myers in his beautiful 57 Cameo pick-up truck.

Everyone from the WCOPMA would like to Congratulate newcomer Dan Myers on his first win! Dan became the first blown entry (and the first truck) to win a WCOPMA event as well!
